quiet witness

On Long Lake in Ontario, Canada I was built.

Painted white and perfectly situated, I was called Stony Lonesome.

I have been a quiet witness to laughter, tall-tales, card games, hummingbirds feeding, and creatures frolicking.

I may be missing my original rusted green pump.

I may be missing a pair of birch - or two.

I may be missing gas lamps and more than a couple of weather worn docks.

I still have a warm stove during chilly mornings.

I still hold the smell of bug spray, pines, and bacon.

I still have a screened in porch perfect for listening to loons and whippoorwills.

I still sit near a cool, clear lake where beavers build their dams.

On Long Lake between Apsley and Lakefield, Ontario, Canada I was built.

Repainted white and perfectly situated, I am called Stony Lonesome.

I will continue to be a quiet witness to laughter, tall-tales, card games, hummingbirds feeding, and creatures frolicking.

Carrie

 

Released in 1976 it was terrifying at the time. Spacek (The Help) played Carrie a girl raised by a very religious mother who is tortured by her classmates. Laurie (The Faculty) played Carrie's mother. Irving (Zero Hour) was the popular girl whose friends bullied Carrie. Some may have forgotten that Travolta (Staying Alive) played the boy that took Carrie to prom. The plot is a little off from the book, but the remake makes up for it. All in all, I say: SEE IT if you like Stephen King books and if you are going to see the remake - otherwise - SKIP IT

The remake is more complete than the original. Carrie (Moretz from Kick-Ass) is thrust into high school without knowing much about the real world. She is tortured by one of her classmates in particular. One of the popular girls who feels bad for her arranges for a boy to take Carrie to prom. The expelled torturer ruins the day and turns Carrie into a killer. Carrie has special powers in this remake, too. Carrie's mother (Moore from Children of Men) is a much more complex character in this film than the original - we see more into her choices. Greer (13 Going on 30) stars as a teacher - I thought this the most odd choice. All in all, I say: SEE IT if you liked the original - SKIP IT if you don't like Stephen King.

A Single Shot

Rockwell (Moon) is in the process of getting a divorce. Reilly (Flight) is his soon to be ex. She wants out because she doesn't want to live in the middle of nowhere and always be broke. Rockwell's character hasn't been able to keep a job since his family lost their farm. He hunts illegally for meat. One day he is out hunting and accidently shoots a young girl. Turns out she is shacked up in the nearby woods guarding some money that belongs to her father - a criminal (Isaacs from Harry Potter). Also in the film are: Macy (Fargo), Levine (Silence of the Lambs), Anderson (Control) and Wright (Source Code). All in all, I say: SEE IT - I got it on Netflix - the ending is poetic. Oh, it is a slow character study kind of film.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Yes folks, this is what happens when I have HBOGo on my phone, and I can't sleep. It's about magicians and it makes fun of guys like Chris Angel - I think that's his name. You know the type - they lock themselves in boxes for a week - how is that magic?! All in all, I say: SKIP IT - pretty bad, but here's is the burning question: when exactly did 50 something Carrey start to look like this....

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

This is what happens to me when I have insomnia! The gang swims to Europe (I know what you're thinking - why didn't they swim to US then?!). They are being hunted, so they join a circus. They help circus get their "act" together and are able to travel to the US. None of these movies make sense to me. All in all, I say: SKIP IT in fact - run away! runaway!

Jurassic Park series

In 1993 Spielberg put Crichton's masterpiece onto the big screen. I was still working at Cineplex Odeon Theatres at Stone Mountain Festival at the time. One of our biggest theatres had to be remodeled/retrofitted with a new surround sound system. It was a new technology - sound would now come from all over and not just the front of the theatre. It would be louder and more background noise would be heard - like raindrops and the sound of crickets. We all couldn't wait for our projectionist to finish splicing the movie together. We all stayed late, opened up the leftover bag of popcorn, and settled in for an amazing experience. I will forever love this film because it marks a first in my life.

The movie was out of a really long time. Many of my friends and I purchased the book and hurried to finish the massive thing in time for the movie. The movie was super impressive. We didn't see it in 3D has the poster shows - that came much later. Neill (The Piano), Dern (Wild At Heart), Goldblum (The Fly), Jackson (Snakes on a Plane), Wong (Mulan), and Attenborough (Elizabeth) were in the film. Dinosaurs are brought back to life by a very wealthy man and his scientist. He invites several famous scientist to come and take a ride when all hell breaks lose. All in all, I say: SEE IT

By 1997, Spielberg was ready for his sequel. I don't think it made as much as the first. This time just Goldblum (The Fly) is the only scientist from the first film to return. Moore (Non-Stop), Postlethwaite (Inception who died in 2011), Howard (Full Metal Jacket), Vaughn (Swingers), Schiff (West Wing), and Stormare (22 Jump Street) also appear. The action and plot [Different groups of scientist are studying the creatures - one as Goldblum's character. The other group is out of their depth.] were just as good as the first. All in all, I say: SEE IT

  This third installment was directed by Johnston (Jumanji). Neill's character is the main character in this film. He is asked to go to the island to help locate a wealthy family that visited the island and became lost. Macy (Fargo) and Leoni (Spanglish) are the couple. Nivola (American Hustle) and Jeter (Open Range) also appear. All in all, I say: SEE IT - it really wasn't half bad. Also, at the end - creatures escape.

Pratt (Parks & Recreation) and Howard (The Help) are the main characters in the fourth installment that will come out next year. I can't wait!
