IMDb writes, "A Missouri farmer joins a Confederate guerrilla unit and winds up on the run from the Union soldiers who murdered his family." Many feel this is one of Eastwood's best westerns, southerners in particular (go figure :)) Locke appears in this with him - they made four other films together after this one before their notorious break-up. The movie was based on a book and was directed by Eastwood himself. All in all, I say: SEE IT if you like Eastwood westerns. In this he has a name, too!! "Well, you gonna pull those pistols or whistle dixie."
