Amazon writes, "This novel reveals more about the Battle of Gettysburg than any piece of learned nonfiction on the same subject. Michael Shaara's account of the three most important days of the Civil War features deft characterizations of all of the main actors, including Lee, Longstreet, Pickett, Buford, and Hancock. The most inspiring figure in the book, however, is Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, whose 20th Maine regiment of volunteers held the Union's left flank on the second day of the battle. This unit's bravery at Little Round Top helped turned the tide of the war against the rebels. There are also plenty of maps, which convey a complete sense of what happened July 1-3, 1863." This book was told from multiple points of views. It was like being there - it was one of the first historical books I read that I just loved. I think I have read it two or three times. All in all, I say: READ IT
Berenger (Major Crimes) is Longstreet, Sheen (West Wing) is Lee, Lang (Avatar) is Pickett, Jordan (Dune) is Armistead, Daniels (Newsroom) is Chamberlain, and Elliot (Tombstone) is Buford. This movie did a pretty good job at depicting the book. Obviously, we don't hear what's going on in their heads. It's a four hour movie with an intermission. All in all, I say: SEE IT after you read the book.
This is a quote from the book spoken by Tom Chamberlain:
They kept insistin' they wasn't fightin' for no slaves, they were fighting for their 'rats'. It finally dawned on me that what the feller meant was their 'rights'.
