I never read the book. The first movie was out in 1990 and it freaked me out. Natasha Richardson (Nell) is basically raped because in this freakish cult so few women can have babies. She's fertile in this future bizarro world. She has to live with a wealthy, powerful family in hopes of giving them a child. It is a very religious society and no one is to be trusted. She is trying to survive and escape. Faye Dunaway (The Bye Bye Man) is the woman of the house. Aidan Quinn (Elementary) is the chauffeur who falls in love with her. Robert Duvall (Open Range) is the Commander - man of the house. All in all, I say: SKIP IT because there is a newly improved version on Hulu.
It's going to be more than one season, so it's going to be different than the book I believe. Elizabeth Moss (West Wing) is the poor woman who has been separated from her husband and child in a section of the US that is now under the new rule of this strict religious nation that gained control through terrorism and the apathy of citizens. She wants to escape but can't really trust anyone. Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck) is the woman of the house. Max Minghella (The Mindy Project) is the chauffeur. Joseph Fiennes (Risen) is the commander. All in all, I say: SEE IT - it's been updated and comes across extremely realistic in this day in age.
