Scatter, Adapt, and Remember: How Humans will Survive a Mass Extinction
This book is for the novice, so it was a quick read for me. The first section gives background on all the Earth's previous extinction events. The next section, contemplates whether we are indeed in what many scientists believe is the Sixth Extinction. I agree with all the evidence put forth from scientist each specializing in different areas that we are indeed at the beginning of Earth's Sixth Extinction - granted we still have hundreds of thousands of years left if past extinctions are what we use as a basis for a timeline. There is even background on homo extinctions - for example the Neanderthals. Both sides of the argument are given - I am on the side that Homo neanderthalensis and Homo ergaster "intermingled". The last section, explains how humans can survive - we (as a species) are compared to rats, cockroaches, and kudzu. This is where the science gets a little one sided in my opinion because the author does believe Homo sapiens can survive the next extinction. I just don't see it though because of our location on a food web - I don't see us surviving - maybe if there is some evolution/adaption of some kind and we no longer are able to be classified as Homo sapiens. I did learn that there is a group of scientists that maintain a database called CD3WD which contains as much human knowledge as possible about pre-technological civilization, so if there was an extinction event anyone who survived would be able to read up on basic agriculture, medicine, and power generation for example - if they printed the database and kept it in their bunker. The author believes we have to move underground as soon as possible using the surface for mostly agriculture in order to survive, that or Titan - the moon that most believe is completely habitable. The section on how Homo would come to be threatened - possible extinction factors was predictable 0 one being a pandemic. She goes for over a page on the importance of vaccinations especially for children all over the world in order to prevent events like we have had int he past - Bubonic Plague (Black Death) and so on... All in all, I say: READ IT - if just to know more about the topic.
