Muppet Movies

In 1976 Jim Henson released as a nightly tv show - The Muppet Show. It lasted for five seasons, and I think I saw about 90% of them.
All in all, I say: WATCH IT
Then in 1979 two greats got together and made a movie. Jim Henson and Frank Oz collaborated on The Muppet Movie.
The whole group sets off across the country to reach Hollywood in order to make movies. The bad guy is someone looking to cook Kermit's legs. All in all, I say: RENT IT
In 1981, I went to the theatre to see The Great Muppet Caper.

It was done by Henson and Oz, but it took a different turn from the other movies. They a journalists that try to find a jewel thief. I think if I remember correctly it was supposed to be the movie they made in Hollywood, but I could be wrong. It was just different that's all. All in all, I say: SEE IT
In 1984, Frank Oz and Jim Henson collaborate again on The Muppets Take Manhattan. In New York the group wants to put on a musical. They have to get jobs to raise money and along the way Kermit gets amnesia which makes things even more difficult.
Aside from the tv show this movie is my favorite of all of them. All in all, I say: RENT IT
The same year Manhattan was released Muppet Babies was released on tv. This show was a cartoon and ran for eight seasons.

I was too old at this point to enjoy this show. The little baby voices bothered me a little. All in all, I say: SEE IT if you have a toddler.
In 1996, Henson's son took over and made Muppet Treasure Island. After this film the family sold the Muppets to Disney.

The movie wasn't bad don't get me wrong, but I had to watch it a dozen times or so when I worked at Hollywood Video, so it's not one of my favorites. All in all, I say: SEE IT
In 1999, Muppets From Space is released. It is not a Henson and Oz film. Henson had died by this time, so someone new took over. It has fabulous music. Gonzo's discovers that his family is from outer space. This quickly became my new favorite as an adult. All in all, I say: SEE IT and then buy the soundtrack.

There are two other movies that go here in the timeline but I've already blogged about them. Many people don't know that the muppets did their own version of the Wizard of Oz in 2005.

I didn't see the whole thing. All in all, I say: SKIP IT and that's saying a lot.
Recently in 2014 a new movie was released with some very big stars. Muppets Most Wanted.
An evil Doppelganger of Kermits switches places with him. This time the gang is on tour, but it is really a cover for the bad Kermit to steal. I was bored. All in all, I say: SEE IT if you've seen the others. If not, SKIP IT.
